Nearly every day, someone at EverGreen Escapes gets asked, "Why should I book your tour versus...?". We passionately launch into our message about our scrumptious Cascadian Safari lunch and our luxurious bio-fueled Mercedes vehicles but what always is the clincher is when we describe our naturalist guides. Many people hear directly from past customers by reading our complimentary Trip Advisor reviews. Nearly every single review mentions the incredible care our guide provided on their adventure. So what is it that makes a good guide? Is it the training we provide? Is it the years of experience? Are some people just born with these skills? Well the answer is a little of all three. To give you an idea of the caliber of an EverGreen Escapes guide and to get the word out to perspective guides what we are looking for, we give you: Simon Buzzard - Lead Escape Artist and Adventure Activities Coordinator.
Simon joined the team at EverGreen Escapes in 2009. This company has grown consistently over the last few years and we were in the middle of a growth spurt and in need of high quality guides. Our friends at Crooked Trails referred Simon to us and we got him out and up to speed very quickly. Here are a few of Simon's credentials:
- Level 3 Kayak certification (ACA)
- Wilderness First Responder
- Fluent in French and Spanish
- Graduate of University of Oregon Outdoor Pursuits program
- Avid back country skiier and Rock Climber
- Several years leading outdoor adventures
Augmenting his training, Simon brings a diverse life experience to our team. He grew up in several countries in Africa including Lesotho (can you find it on a map?) and attended school in France and Switzerland. He taught elementary school in Honduras, worked with Kenyan youth on an HIV prevention program and of course has logged many days exploring the wild and scenic areas of Cascadia.
What these credentials fail to capture is the innate skill and passion Simon has for sharing our region and our region's story to visitors and locals alike. It is an art form to be able help a beginner overcome his / her apprehension about trying a new activity or visiting an unfamiliar location. Our guests' skill and experience level is quite diverse. Our guides must be able to challenge the experienced and (sometimes simultaneously) not stray to far out of the comfort zone of the beginner. We challenge our guests intellectually as well as physically. Simon and the rest of our team continue to learn local history, ecology and geologic events as a life long pursuit not only as a job requirement.
Do you have a story like Simon? Are you interested in joining an elite team of guides and be a part of the story of EverGreen Escapes? Contact EverGreen Escapes' Chief Outing Officer, Dan Moore, with your passion and story. Qualified applicants will be considered for the upcoming 2012 Summer Guide Season. Lacking the experience and skills required for being on the EverGreen Escapes Team but have the passion and desire? Consider participating in the 2012 Guide Academy next spring - brought to you by EverGreen Escapes.
