Costa Rica protects approximately 26 percent of its national territory in national parks, wildlife reserves, forest preserves and private reserves. Known as a hotspot for biodiversity, it packs 4.5% of the world's known plants and animals (90,000 species) in just .03% of the planet's surface. This places the country among the top 20 most biodiversity rich places in the world and among the top 10 most biodiversity rich rainforest ecosystems. But perhaps more important for travelers, the country holds among the greatest density of species of all countries in the world. This means that on one trip, travelers are likely to come in contact with more biodiversity than any other place.

"Costa Rica has held a very special place in my heart since my first visit in 2001, when I spent an entire semester traveling the country, living with a Costa Rican family and studying some of the most rare and diverse ecosystems on the planet. During this initial sojourn in tropical paradise I learned the names and natural history of hundreds of species of unique and fascinating plants and animals, made countless friendships with the local "ticos", and even completed a research project in Tropical Ecology.
Costa Rica (literally "rich coast" in Spanish) is also where I first met and fell in love with the Pacific Ocean; a love affair that has kept me living within a couple hours of the coast for most of my adult life. Several years after graduating college, I returned to Central America to work as Cruise Director on a small expedition cruise ship that traveled the coast of Costa Rica and Panama, visiting people and places that are seldom encountered by tourists such as the legendary Cocos Island and the Emberá tribe of the remote Darién Jungle. From cloud forests to coastline, active volcanoes to scenic rivers, Costa Rica has more scenic beauty to offer within it's borders than most countries 10 times it's size.
