Escape Plan:
Spot for bald eagles soaring overhead as we travel north of the Emerald City and up into the Skagit Flats, where we will witness flocks of snow geese that are wintering in the Skagit Valley, we visit Fir Island Farm/Hayton Reserve, one of the best places for birders to observe the graceful bird. About 80,000 snow geese winter in western Washington each year, most of them in the Skagit Valley, and can be found in the area from mid-October through early May. Next on the itinerary is a visit to the Taylor Shellfish Farm on the Puget Sound, one of the most beautiful and pristine tidelands in the world. The clean, clear waters of the Sound provide the environment for growing some of the most bountiful and flavorful shellfish harvests to be found anywhere. You will have the chance to sample some delicious raw oysters and even handle a live Geoduck! Continue up the gorgeous winding curves of the Chuckanut drive to Larrabee State Park. The park is primarily forested with coniferous trees and dense woodland vegetation. It has marshlands, wetlands, streams, lakes and Chuckanut Mountain, which is known for the Chuckanut sandstone. We hop out here and take in the stunning views of Rosario Strait while exploring endless tide pools on Samish Bay. If we are lucky we will catch a sunset over the San Juan Archipelago! Arriving into the charming Fairhaven district of Bellingham we stroll into the Fairhaven Candy where we get to enjoy the goodness in life and not worry. That includes the "goodies" in life too! Crumblz! They use organic sugar and non-GMO corn syrup because they believe nature got it right the first time… We savor our sweets on the hour and half drive back to the Seattle!
