The city of Portland is renown for its green spaces, public parks, access to the outdoors, and progressive transportation planning, and these things come together in the nexus between the city center and Washington Park in the city’s West Hills. Hike Portland provides the chance to get into our Pacific Northwest forests even if you don’t have a vehicle, the patience to fight the crowds in the Columbia Gorge, or the time to travel into the Coast Range or up to Mt. Hood during your stay.

This is a city in a long-term love affair with its parks, and Washington Park is central to the story. It’s been a public park since 1871, and has grown 10-fold over the years, to include such institutions as the Portland Children’s Museum, a Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial, and the Oregon Zoo. Almost half its area is the Hoyt Arboretum, so our hike includes many of the Arboretum’s trails and features.

Hike Portland begins in the city center, with a short walk to the MAX (Metro Area Express) light-rail train. Riding the train into the hills, we’ll debark at North America’s deepest underground transit station, and take the elevator to the surface. In the heart of Washington Park, you’ll quickly see why this 400-acre park is also a big part of the city’s culture before experiencing one of the finest features of life in Portland – the proximity between the built environment and our beloved natural spaces.

Hike through Hoyt Arboretum, with an array of native and ornamental tree species, and along trails whose themes are self-explanatory: the Magnolia Trail, the Redwood Trail, and more. We’ll descend towards the city hiking mostly downhill, traveling approximately 3.5 miles, with a modest 250’ of elevation gain. Along the way, we’ll pause among giants at the Redwood Deck, pass by the historic Elephant House (no actual elephants!), wander into the Portland International Rose Test Garden, and learn about important native plants like salal, western redcedar, thimbleberry, and more.

Once out of the park, you may continue with your guide to the nearest MAX station and use your included all-day transit pass to return to the city center, or head off in any direction you choose, with recommendations and walking directions from your guide.

“I absolutely loved my tours with Evergreen Escapes! Both of my tour guides, Bri and Asia were amazing. They were both knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. Plus they’ve lived interesting lives so it was fun getting to know them while learning more about Portland. I went on the Portland city tour and the Columbia Gorge Wine & Waterfalls tour. As I said, both were phenomenal. I loved seeing Portland’s beautiful natural landscapes, waterfalls, and tasting wine. The city tour was also great because we learned a lot about the local history and saw major attractions like the Rose Garden. It was also an enlightening experience because I got to connect with people I normally wouldn’t meet. I loved meeting and making friends with my fellow tour attendees. I would absolutely recommend both tours and Evergreen Escapes!”  – GoPlaces, TripAdvisor Review
