ferry mountainsThis morning we make our way to the majestic Olympic Peninsula following the curved shoreline of Hood Canal offering spectacular scenery and the chance to enjoy the beauty of the region while cruising along U.S. Highway 101. This scenic roadway hugs the edge of the deep-water fjord and the forest grows right to the edge of the shoreline.

Arriving into Port Angeles, we’ll climb the observation tower on the City Pier (Foot of Lincoln St.), to see all the action on the port and, in the background, Vancouver Island and the Olympic Mountains. Enjoy a short beach walk providing you up-close insight in to the world of sea cucumbers, sea anemones, giant Pacific octopuses, and sea slugs.

We continue west on a beautiful drive through the Elwha Valley and along the rushing Elwha River when all of a sudden you will feel that you have been transported into Fiordland when peaking out at the glacially carved, crystal clear, 12-mile long Lake Crescent.

If there is time, we may stop at Madison Falls for an easy hike to do along the way or if you are up for a bit more, further up the valley beyond Lake Mills is the trailhead to the Olympic Hot Springs. Situated among steep cliffs, peaks and dense forest, Lake Crescent is another hidden treasure of the Olympics.

We then travel to the famed Hoh Rain Forest, the not-to-be-missed attraction here on the Olympic Peninsula. Moist ocean air from the Pacific brings over 150″ (record of 211″) of annual rainfall to this area, feeding a mossy maze of temperate rainforest!

Three loop trails near the Hoh Visitor Center are easy to stroll and give a great sampling of the area.  The year round Visitor Center is the starting point for many longer and more challenging hikes up to the alpine meadows and glaciers.  Your guide will pick an appropriate hike for the day.

Next, we head over to Rialto Beach, north of the Quillayute River. It is one of the few drive-to beaches in the area and a beautiful spot to enjoy the surf and watch shorebirds, eagles and seals. On the South side of the river, at La Push, lies First, Second and Third Beach. Sea stacks and tidal pools add to the view popular with photographers.

Your guide will then take you to your hotel for the evening, where you can choose from many Sequim restaurants for dinner on your own.

• Sleep: Lake Crescent Lodge

Olympic Pen_Dungeness Spit 2Your guide will pick you up in the morning for another exciting day of exploration.  You’ll head back to the scenic loop and over to the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge. Your naturalist guide will lead you out on an interpretive nature walk through the forest and out onto the sand spit that hooks out into the strait where an old lighthouse sit.  Spot for birds  along the way. In Spring and Fall thousands of waterfowl and shorebirds descend on the shallow waters protected by the spit!

olympic_viewNext we climb up to Hurricane Ridge, a mountain citadel that puts you at the edge of the parks exceptionally jagged peaks. We watch for wildlife, too; Olympic marmots and black-tailed deer often show up, and black bear are fairly common. From the meadows at the summit take in a superb 360-degree view that embraces the surrounding mountains, the strait, the San Juan Islands.

*If Hurricane Ridge is closed or if it is fogged we will explore Dear Park or explore Lake Crescent and Sol Duc Falls.
