Hoh Rainforest

Olympic Pen_Dungeness Spit 2This morning we make our way to the majestic Olympic Peninsula following the curved shoreline of the Hood Canal, offering spectacular scenery and the chance to enjoy the beauty of the region while cruising along famous U.S. Highway 101. This scenic roadway hugs the edge of the deep-water fjord and the forest grows right to the edge of the shoreline.

Pass through the hamlets of sunny Sequim (in the dry rain shadow region of the Olympic Mountains–it receives as little rainfall as Los Angeles!) and the outdoor adventure hub of Port Angeles before turning the tires toward Olympic National Park.

olympic_viewNext we climb up to Hurricane Ridge, a mountain citadel that puts you at the edge of wild & jagged peaks. Don’t forget to watch for wildlife, too; Olympic marmots and black-tailed deer often show up, and black bear are fairly common in the summer months. From the meadows at the summit take in a superb 360-degree view that reveals the surrounding mountains, the Strait of Juan De Fuca, Vancouver Island (and glistening Victoria) and the San Juan Islands.

*If Hurricane Ridge is closed or weather is poor we’ll recommend shifting activities to the Lake Crescent, Elwha River and Sol Duc Falls areas.  If the tide is right, we may head for the North Coast to explore low-tide pools for marine wildlife.

After exploring Hurricane Ridge we’ll descend from the mountains to continue our push West toward the Pacific Ocean.  A short drive later, passing through the Elwha River valley (home to the world’s largest dam removal project currently), and we reach azure Lake Crescent–our destination for the evening.  Enjoy a mellow hike to a waterfall, push a bit harder to summit Storm King or rent a kayak or paddle board for sunset.

Your guide will then take you to your hotel for the evening and assist in finding a delicious meal!

We like to recommend the Lake Crescent Lodge for it’s National Park heritage and proximity to tomorrow’s destinations.  During the peak summer season–short-term attempts to find a room just won’t succeed.  Not to worry–there are plenty of meal and lodging options back a little way in Port Angeles.

• Sleep: Lake Crescent Lodge

ferry mountainsOn morning 2, we continue west on a beautiful drive to the famed Hoh Rain Forest, certainly one of the “not-to-be-missed” attractions on the Olympic Peninsula. Moist ocean air from the Pacific brings over 150″ (the record is 211″) of annual rainfall to this area, feeding a mossy maze of temperate rainforest!

Three loop trails near the Hoh Visitor Center are easy to stroll and give a great sampling of the area.  The year round Visitor Center is the starting point for many longer and more challenging hikes up to the alpine meadows and glaciers.  Your guide will pick an appropriate hike for the day.  If you’ve risen early enough this morning (and have the proper energy level), push yourself a little bit to see how far up the Hoh River trail you can travel!

Depending on timing and your interests, we may head toward hauntingly-beautiful and rugged La Push.  Wend through old-growth coastal Spruce forest to achieve First, Second or Third Beach views. Massive sea stacks dot the beach to create a landscape you won’t soon forget.

Additionally, we might round out the day by tracking record-setting big trees, adding a hike in the beautiful Lake Quinault area, or stopping at epic Ruby Beach on the drive back to Seattle.  It’s a lot of ground and beauty to cover in two days–but we’ll have you home for dinner tonight!
