Portland Tourism Job: Travel Logistics & Guide Manager – Now Hiring

Open Position: Portland Basecamp General Manager

Our administrative team is comprised of a half-dozen creative, hard-working, year-round employees; the Portland Basecamp Manager is part of the leadership team that directs and supports front-line guide staff. The Basecamp Manager is on-call daily during the summer season (Memorial Day through September) and reports directly to the Oregon Region General Manager (and occasionally to the Managing Director).

The Portland Basecamp Manager may be required to perform duties outside of this job description to assist travelers, teammates, or to achieve strategic company aims.  Our Portland Basecamp Manager is responsible for the following duties, including but not limited to:

Position Specifics

Daily Travel Operations & Customer Service

Ensure tours are launched on-time, fully prepared, and with 5-star quality. Oversee every aspect of tours departing within Oregon.

Serve as the first point of contact for guides when issues arise in the field; problem-solve in real time.

Ensure daily tour kits are prepared; maintain tour supplies and food for daily departures.

Communicate clearly with travelers; confirm tour details with travelers before tours.

Maintain comprehensive knowledge of destinations statewide and of all Evergreen Escapes staff & services.

Manage tour date inventory and bookings on multiple online platforms.

Coordinate appointments with local partners including wineries, caterers, activity operators, transportation providers, concierge teams, travel agents, and others as necessary.

Thoroughly clean interiors and exteriors of fleet vehicles prior to tour departure.
Maintain an office environment designed for smooth tour preparation and breakdown, sanitary food preparation, and a commitment to low-waste practices.

Inform Evergreen Escapes’ sales team on resource availability and strategic allocation.

Maintain company’s online reputation, respond to reviews on TripAdvisor, Google, Yelp, GetYourGuide, etc.

Participate in industry networking opportunities. Seek, build, and maintain strategic relationships within the local travel industry.

During peak season months, all staff become slightly more sales- and support-oriented. Assist customers by phone and email with an emphasis on selling Portland-area tours.

Human Resources Management

Interview, hire, onboard, train, and schedule guides in coordination with the Oregon Region General Manager.

Manage guide payroll, reimbursements, gratuities, and bonuses.

Facilitate team community with the Portland guides via periodic company events, meet-ups, and an end-of-season team retreat.

Regulatory Compliance and Fleet Management

Support Oregon Region Manager in land-use permit maintenance including with National Parks, Forest Service, Oregon State Marine Board, State Parks, and more as necessary.

Regularly inspect and maintain vehicles, including repairs and insurance claims.
Manage leasing and permitting of tour vehicles. Coordinate short-term vehicle rentals and 3rd-party transport as necessary.

Maintain company and vehicle permits with Portland Bureau of Transportation in coordination with Oregon Region Manager.

Maintain proper documentation and insurance coverage for all tour resources.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree, or 2+ years in tourism/travel with significant relevant experience.

• Experience in leadership development, team building, and/or group facilitation.

• Knowledge of naturalist specialties which may include: anthropology, birding, botany, geology, glaciology, or volcanology.

• Pertinent adventure certifications, potentially including: WFR, Leave No Trace, CPR, 1st Aid, Multnomah County Food Handler’s Permit

• PNW region-specific knowledge of geography, culture, natural & human history, and ecology.

• Employee must pass a background check and motor vehicle record check in order to be placed on company auto insurance.

• Proficiency with Mircosoft Office Suite

COMPENSATION

$36,000 to $42,000 annual salary; depends on experience.
