The San Juan archipelago harbors near-mythical beauty amid its undeveloped islands and seascapes. Its historical relevance is just as intriguing.  Spend a week in the splendid San Juan Islands with a naturalist guide, exploring, hiking, cycling and dining on fresh local cuisine with local wines and brews.  Discover why the New York Times named the San Juan Islands as the #2 place to visit in 2011.  The article cites the number of San Juan Islands restaurants being opened by acclaimed chefs, along with the jaw-dropping scenery and the many parks and preserves. Day 1 to 2 | Whidbey Island

Whidbey Island Washington’s largest island, Whidbey, provides an impressive diversity of unique natural, historical, and agricultural experiences.  Once the home of several Coast Salish tribes, Whidbey now claims to be Puget Sound’s largest artist community, and supports many well-known painters, writers, and entertainers, among others.  It’s no surprise they choose to live here, considering Whidbey Island’s stunning scenery (Whidbey boasts Washington’s most popular State Park, Deception Pass), wealth of local agriculture (including aquaculture and the world-famous Penn Cove Mussel), and intriguing history (Ebey’s Landing is the nation’s first National Historic Reserve, as established by the National Park Service).  Simply put, Whidbey Island is a fantastic representation of all the best that Western Washington has to offer!

Day 2 to 3 | Lopez Island

Lopez Island Lopez Island, located in the San Juan Island archipelago in northwestern Washington, is a favorite getaway for locals and often referred to as “The Friendly Isle” for its welcoming attitude and friendly residents.  Boasting a gentler topography than the other large neighboring islands, Lopez is one of the most popular road-biking destinations in Washington, with a beautiful mixed scenery of rolling farmland, coniferous forests, and driftwood-strewn beaches offering spectacular views of the snow-capped Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges (including majestic Mt. Baker).  The Island’s farms also feature an impressive variety of products, from the dairy cows that help support the famous Lopez Island Creamery to grapes used in Lopez Island Vineyards’ estate wines; from llamas and alpacas to kale and kiwis.  Lopez Island offers that rare chance to explore someplace new while feeling like a local!

Day 3 to 5 | Orcas Island

Orcas Island In an island chain renowned for its coastal beauty and marine ecology, Orcas Island stands out as a true gem.  The largest of the San Juan Islands, Orcas provides a wealth of unique experiences and activities.  Moran State Park, the largest recreation area in the San Juans, offers breathtaking views of the archipelago from atop Mt. Constitution, while sea-kayaking the waters around Orcas allows an intimate exploration of the Island’s coastline.  Additionally, there are many smaller, neighboring islands worth investigating, including The Nature Conservancy’s Yellow Island or the remarkable sandstone Sucia Island.  And while the Island’s namesake is actually a Spanish military officer who sent an expedition to the region in 1791, whale-watching trips from Orcas Island coincidentally often encounter by those beautiful and iconic black-and-white dolphins, Orcas!

[box]Day 5 to 8 | San Juan Island

The San Juan archipelago harbors near-mythical beauty amid its undeveloped islands and seascapes. Its historical relevance is just as intriguing. Spend the day discovering this remote wilderness with a naturalist guide. As the morning ferry cruises to Friday Harbor, keep an eye out for animals. Then embark on a 3-hour orca search by kayak, passing wildlife refuges and rugged coastline. Picnic with local fare and a glass of wine, then explore historic British and American “Pig War” camps. As evening sets, visit an island winery or lavender farm.
