  • Embark on short interpretative nature walks around 2-3 gorgeous waterfalls, such as Latourell Falls, Starvation Creek, Wahkeena Falls, or Horsetail Falls
  • Wind along the curvy corridor of the Historic Columbia River Highway and stop to revel in magnificent river views along the way
  • When available (due to recent forest fires): feel the spray of the 620-ft-tall Multnomah Falls from the Benson Bridge.  Since the fires, access is frequently restricted at times heavy visitation (by the government).  We’ll do our best!  Don’t worry–there are so many waterfalls!
  • Learn about the lava flows and colossal floods that shaped this breathtaking area and fostered its agricultural abundance
  • Taste some of Oregon’s best varietals at two boutique wineries in the Hood River Area (tastings included)
  • Enjoy an elegantly composed cheese and charcuterie plate, and snacks and refreshments throughout the day

Columbia Gorge Waterfalls - Multnomah FallsWe begin mid-day on our Columbia Gorge waterfalls and wine journey, heading east from Portland toward the spectacular Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area

As we travel along the mighty Columbia River we will be on the lookout for Bald Eagles and Osprey, while admiring the towering basalt cliffs and other fascinating rock formations formed when the now tame River cut its way violently through the Cascade Mountain Range. On a clear day, white-cloaked volcanic peaks loom over us like sentinels guarding the majestic landscape.

We will drive along the Historic Columbia River Highway, where you are greeted at nearly every bend of the road with another breathtaking view. Here we can take in a few of the 70 Columbia Gorge waterfalls found in the Columbia Gorge Scenic Area, including the second tallest perennial waterfall in the US, Multnomah Falls. Opportunities for hiking, splashing, and photography abound, as the trails around these natural beauties provide ample access for every kind of adventurer.

Wine Tasting the Columbia River Gorge

As we continue heading east, the wet forests of the coastal Pacific Northwest give way to Garry Oak, Ponderosa Pines, and other more arid vegetation, creating prime growing conditions for grapes. Nearing the town of Hood River we will embark on a tour of two local wineries, each unique and charming in its own way. Here we’ll sample some of the boutique wines found only in Oregon. The weather, views, and wines make for an unparalleled vineyard experience.

Columbia Gorge Wine Tasting - Wy'EastWhile we are between wineries, your guide will tell the story of the land. You’ll delve into both natural and cultural history, so that with each sip of wine you can experience how the forces that shaped this incredible landscape have also shaped the wine in your glass. Some of the wineries we may visit include Cathedral Ridge, The Pines 1852, and Wy’East Vineyards. After our fill of excellent wines, we’ll wrap up the Columbia Gorge Waterfalls & Wine Tour and head back to Portland in time to enjoy the sites and sounds of the city!

Evergreen Escapes blends the best natural wonders, boutique wineries, and urban enchantments into small-group day tours and private, custom escapes. We’re a small business on a mission: to create positive change in the world by connecting people to each other, to our epic places, and to nature.

1. What should we wear/bring on our escape?

  • We recommend wearing layers that you can add if there is wind or rain, and remove when there is sunshine. We also suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes so that you can explore further at some of our stops.  Finally, it’s always a good idea to bring sunglasses and a camera!  We provide reusable water bottles, along with other snacks and refreshments. See more on how to Pack and Prepare.

2. How strenuous is this? How much experience do I need to have?

  • All of our scheduled departures are meant for beginners (easy to moderate). We try to cater our tours to all ability and interest levels – and this really depends on the group that day. Your Escape artist will choose the difficulty of the physical activity based on the group’s interest and ability level. If you are interested in a different level, we can create a private itinerary specifically for you. Please also don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions!

3. Can I have vegetarian/ special diet food?

  • Yes. Please advise us if you have any food restrictions or requests. We can accommodate vegetarian and lactose intolerant diets. We also can often provide gluten free food when given enough notice.

4. What is your Cancellation Policy?

5. Should I get Travel Insurance?

  • We recommend that you do.  Travel Insurance can be purchased to cover penalty costs in the event you need to cancel or change your travel plans (subject to approval of claim by the insurer). It also can provide medical and emergency assistance protection as well as some loss and delay coverage.

6. Should I tip my guide?

  • We take great pride in orchestrating rich and memorable adventures for each and every client. As a result, many of our clients are inspired to show their appreciation in the form of a gratuity. While gratuities are not an expectation, our guides traditionally receive an amount consistent with the rest of the service industry in the U.S., somewhere between 10% and 20%.
